Hebrews, Lesson 5, Pt 1

Hebrews – Lesson 5, 2:5-9

The topic of the passage in Hebrews is once again angels.

Hebrews 2: 5-9 For He did not subject to angels the world to come, concerning which we are speaking. 6 But one has testified somewhere, saying, "WHAT IS MAN, THAT YOU REMEMBER HIM? OR THE SON OF MAN, THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT HIM? 7 "YOU HAVE MADE HIM FOR A LITTLE WHILE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS; YOU HAVE CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR, AND HAVE APPOINTED HIM OVER THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; 8 YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET." For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. 9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.

Once again, the author compares our Lord to angels. The very first point he makes is regarding the “creation” of the future. In Exodus, we see this point made for the first time:

Exodus 23:20 "See, I am sending an angel before you to protect you on your journey and lead you safely to the place I have prepared for you.

The angel is sent to guide (remember that angel means messenger) and direct. God reserves the right of control over the future. This reiterates what the author stated earlier:

Hebrews 1:14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.

The passage is a reminder also, of our own future as we see later in Hebrews:

Hebrews 13:14 For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
